There's no way, anyone going to the opening day at Citi Field is going to hear Bobby Parnell or Eddie Kunz announced as the opening day closer ( that's not to say they wont be on the roster). Despite all the posturing there's no doubt that Omar Minaya will acquire a closer.
The question isn't whether Omar will get a closer but more who he will get ?
We've all heard the names through the trade routes; J.J. Putz, Jose Valverde, Kevin Gregg or Bobby Jenks.
Or through signings like K-Rod, Brian Fuentes or Kerry Woods. Even signing a set-up man with closer experience like Brandon Lyon, D. Marte, Trever Miller or Juan Cruz....
But one very appealing name that hasn't surfaced and it's now believed is available is George Sherrill. It would make sense for Baltimore to use their chips to rebuild the team and Sherrill is a huge chip but the Orioles have been almost impossible to trade with as of late. Last year they strung teams along over Brian Roberts until it was too late for them to find alternatives at 2B.
Sherrill is a 31 y/o left hander who in his first year as a closer went 31-37 save opportunities with a 4.73 ERA in 57 appearances and a 3-5 record. Prior to that he spent four years in the Seattle bullpen where he went 10-8 with a 3.81 ERA. After going 2-0 with a 2.36 ERA in 73 appearances in 2007 he was part of the Eric Bedard trade.
George Sherrill is the best lefty closer available in trade that nobody talks about. source Boston Globe
