2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Schoeneweis, Weathers & Brocail

I believe there are three players who no matter what can't return to this team next season; Luis Castillo, Aaron Heilman and Scott Schoeneweis. I've already made my case for Castillo and Heilman but I haven't mentioned why I think Schoeneweis needs to be moved.

On his numbers alone it appears he had a solid year, 73 appearances with an ERA of 3.34. A closer look at those numbers finds some disturbing trends, in the second half of the season his ERA almost doubled going from 2.65-4.66 and he only pitched 56 innings because of his inability to handle right handed hitters. Show's ERA was 4.78 (2.08 lefties) against right handed hitters and their BA was .333 ( lefties BA .178).

Now some will argue that Show was miss used and could be an effective LOOGY, which I would agree with had he not been instrumental in last years failed playoff run. When Wagner went down Scott became the veteran leader of the pen, he called for meetings and he spoke to the press. But what Shoeneweis said whether it was misunderstood or not truly represented how the staff acted and down the stretch Show post a 5.40 ERA. It was the failed pen that resulted in the Mets missing the playoffs for the second year in a row and Show was the leader of that group......

“I’m fully confident I can get the job done,” Schoeneweis said. “I’m not scared. But I’m not a closer. Neither is anyone else in here. We have one closer and he’s hurt.” source Ny Times

The Mets need to exercise all of their pitching demons; 2006 Molina HR= Heilman, 2007 Glavine first inning ( already taken care of) and 2008 Wes Helms HR= Schoeneweis......

As I've said before I do believe the Mets need a veteran leader in the pen and two pitchers the Mets have had past interest in for filling that position are free agents, David Weathers and Doug Brocail.
Last year at the trade deadline Omar attempted to bring in veteran reliever David Weathers. Now a free agent Weathers has almost ruled out returning to the Reds, not only is he experience but was successful in NY. This year he went 4-6 with a 3.25 ERA over 72 relief appearances and allowed only two inherited runners of 15 to score. He finished out the season with an ERA of 2.45 in 36 appearances. In 2007 he filled in as the closer, notching 33 saves with an ERA of 3.59. The 39 y/o right hander has pitched at least 70 innings every year since 1998 with an ERA under four. In three seasons with the Mets (during the dark years; 2002-2004) he pitched 197 innings with a 3.42 ERA, 12-12 record and 7-15 in save opportunities.....

"I don't anticipate anything with Cincinnati," Weathers said. "They haven't called but once or twice. The way we are looking at it, we're moving on. A lot teams have called looking to talk, but we haven't been allowed to talk about numbers. I look forward to Friday." source MLB.com
After the trade deadline past and the Mets were unable to acquire a reliever, they placed a claim on veteran reliever Doug Brocail only to have Astros pulled him back. After the season ended the Astros declined a club option on Brocail and hoped they could sign him cheaper but have been unsuccessful in their attempts. The 41 y/o right hander is a veteran of 14 seasons in which he has an ERA of 3.99. Last season for the Astros he appeared in 73 games with an ERA of 3.93 and a record of 7-5. While he is a veteran, he has never played in the post season or for a large market team....

Brocail has indicated a desire to return, though multiple teams in addition to Houston, including the Red Sox, are interested in the right-hander.
"That wouldn't surprise me that other teams are interested in Doug, he had an outstanding year for us," Wade said. source MLB.com
