2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Omar's making me nervous with the pen...

I know before everything is said and done, we'll get a very good closer but that's not the only whole in the pen.....

Let me preface this by saying I wouldn't be posting this if last off-season and the trade deadline didn't happen.

The 2007 Mets collapsed in Sept., they were in first place the entire year and then just fell apart. The bullpen was just as much responsible for that epic event as every other part of the team. Going into that off season I expected Omar to make improvements to avoid that from occurring again. Omar brought in the best starter in the league in Johan Santana but he failed to add depth to the team offensively or more importantly improve the bullpen. With each day that past I grew more and more frustrated as quality relievers signed elsewhere to reasonable contracts. Omar chose to view the pen as he did the offense both of which going into slumps at the wrong time. Since the pen had been so good in 2006 I accepted that analogy although I was uncomfortable with not bring in at least one quality reliever ( Sorry Matt Wise doesn't fit that description). But then as the season went on, it became obvious that the pen just wasn't the same and needed changes, however; the deadline came and went without improvements being made. So once again the same pen failed and we missed the playoffs....

Now part of this is my expectations and I fully understand that, but after two years of blowing it on the last day of the season I expected Omar to be one of the most aggressive GMs in the league. By now I thought he would have pulled off at least one trade and made a few minor signings. Just as last year, each day I'm starting to see relievers coming off the board with nothing coming our way. Kevin Gregg would have been a nice seventh inning guy but he was traded to the Cubs, Boston picked-up a very solid set-up man in Ramon Ramirez, the Orioles signed to a minor league deal former first round pick Brad Hennessey and two lefties are off the board in Affeldt and Miller making Beilmel in great demand. While I'm trying to stay positive I'm getting that sinking feeling of here we go again. Last year each time a reliever signed I kept saying there's plenty of time and relievers out there Omar's just picking the right one but that right one never came and we got shut out of the reliever market.......
