We're just three days into free agency and Omar has already spun quite an elaborate web of deception. With each day that has passed we've been feed a new direction for next years closer. Omar is a master of keeping his cards close in hand and I'm not sure how many people actually know what direction he's going in......
Each day there seems to be a source within the organization or close to the organization that indicates were going in a completely different direction then we were the day before.
Before the market opened there were rumors and discussion of the Mets possibly looking in-house at Bobby Parnell or Eddie Kunz. Then came the trade rumors for Bobby Jenks, with others speculating about Huston Street, J.J. Putz or Jose Valverde.
To open the market there was the love fest between NY and K-Rod's agent, that made it seem like the two sides were destine for each other. Sources believed the Mets only sticking point would be the length of a contract, but K Rod's agent almost seemed to be begging the Mets to take his record breaking client. Sounding flexible on the contract and announcing that K Rod would be a good fit in NY.
But by the very next day there were more sources indicating that the Mets truly weren't sold on K Rod and were leaning more towards Brian Fuentes. Most of us believed this to be a ploy to keep the price of K Rod down but there could always be some truth to the rumors. Omar does have an affection for left handed pitchers, for what it's worth Mets radio announcer Wayne Hagin was formerly the Rockies announcer and believes Fuentes would be a great fit.
Now today we've come full circle, those sources are now indicating the Mets once again could look into trading for Bobby Jenks because Omar isn't convinced he should give any free agent closers a big contract. While reports are still leaning towards Fuentes, it almost sounds like K Rod is being looked at as damaged goods....
Of course, this is all posturing and calculated misdirection to keep the advantage in negotiations, the fact remains only Omar's closest advisers know exactly who he's after. After all not many teams specifically identify a player, openly admit their intentions and plan to out bid everybody no matter what.

But people in the loop say Omar Minaya is wary of investing a huge contract in free agent Francisco Rodriguez and is intrigued by the idea of trading young talent to Chicago for Jenks. An official from an American League club - not the Angels or White Sox - opines that the Mets would be better off giving up high-level prospects for Jenks than throwing big dollars at K-Rod. source NY Post
