2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

So who will return with Manuel

While not official it's being reported that Jerry Manuel and the Mets have agreed in principle to a two year deal with a club option. Clearly the team responded to Manuel and he was able to handle the position in New York, so it was a pretty easy decision to bring him back. Now the question becomes who will return with him.....

Jerry Manuel has agreed to return as New York Mets manager, SI.com has confirmed. Manuel will get a two year contract, plus a club option for a third season. source SI.com
Dan Warthen should return as the pitching coach, Pelfrey and Perez really responded to him and I think the club was happy to have an old school aggressive style coach after several years with the professor.

I think Guy Conti's job will hinge upon what they decide to do with Pedro. If Pedro returns then so does his personal coach but if he's gone then I could see them looking for a new bullpen coach especially with how bad the pen looked this year. I think it all depends on how much input Conti had, if he was telling Manuel and Warthen who looked good/bad warming up then he takes a lot of the blame but if they just called down and told him who they wanted then whats the difference.

I think Manuel liked having an older sage figure as his bench coach, he learned to manage from Felipe Alou and Jim Leyland. I'd guess if Manuel gets to pick any of his coaches Alomar would stay but if Omar wants to change the clubhouse he might put a fiery former Met in the position.

Will Hojo survive a season that saw David Wright strand a runner at third with no outs in a tied ninth inning of the last week of the season. The Mets were awful at situational hitting especially after the seventh inning and at the end of the season. From hitting behind the runner to elevating the ball to sacrifice bunts. I could see Hojo taking the fall in the same way that Downs did the year before.

Luis Aguayo was absolutely horrible at third base, I'm not even sure what his position was prior to becoming the third base coach. I was told he was a field director which meant he new alot about our prospects and maybe he had some input into Evans, Murphy, Parnell and Niese. If that's the case have him send a report up but that doesn't make him necessary at third. If I could only change one coach it would be Aguayo.

They say the biggest compliment a base coach can get is not being noticed by the fans at all and that's exactly what Ken Oberkfell did in his first year. Not much to say about Obie, he has a lot of minor league managing/coaching experience and if their happy with him why not keep him.
