2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Here's an all around catcher....

If the Mets really are looking to change catchers then I think I have the perfect guy for the job.

Now I'm not endorsing moving Schneider, I thought he did a decent job and think the team should focus their effort elsewhere. But I'm also not so invested in him that it would bother me if they did look for someone else.

If the Mets are hoping to get more offense out of the catchers position, how about a guy who batted fourth or fifth most of last year with a .292 BA, 99 RBIs and 16 HRs. Most would say an offensive catcher like that would be less defensively oriented but this guy has two gold gloves (2002-2003), can throw runners out and has developed some of the best young pitchers in the league. As far as experience he was part of a group that broke into the playoffs for the first time in years, won the World Series and became a perennial playoff team.
So who is this guy.........Bengie Molina

In 2006 Omar attempted to sign Molina but he decided to stay in California with the Giants. The 34 y/o catcher is coming off his best offensive year after being asked to step into the clean-up role when Barry Bonds did not return. He is a lifetime .277 hitter and in 2002 when the Angels won the World Series he hit .286 in that Series. He went to the Playoffs in three years with the Angels and had a cumulative post season average of .264. He has caught youngsters like K-Rod, Ervin Santana, Lackey, Kain, Lowry and Lincecum to name a few while helping veterans like Appier, Sele and Washburn.

The Giants don't appear to be contenders in 2009 and with Molina on the last year of a contract in which he's owed 6 mil. it might be smart for them to move him.
