2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

I'd go with Claudio Vargas

Now that it's official, John Maine is on the DL and the rest of his season is in jeopardy, the Mets need to find another starter. Brian Stokes can spot start and I know alot of people will be clamouring for Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell, but I'd go with a more conservative approach, Claudio Vargas. John Maine's spot has approximately five starts left which means the team needs a tested professional to fill in for him. It's pushing it to ask any of the others to fill in for that long especially in a pennant race. Mike Pelfrey needs to skip a start because he's pushing way past the amount of innings he should pitch this year, I would use Brian Stokes for that start and then keep him as the longman.

The 30 y/o right hander is a lifetime 46-40 with a 4.94 ERA. In his short stint with the Mets he started four games and appeared as a reliever in seven other games, which he had a 3-2 record with a 4.62 ERA. Vargas has started eight games in New Orleans in which he's gone 5-2 with a 4.36 ERA. Vargas was nick named "Magic Man" for his ability to get out of jams without allowing runners to score. He has 114 major league starts under his belt and while he won't pitch a complete game shut out, I'll take his experience as the fifth starter in Sept. over one of the inexperienced younger guys......
