2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Don't forget the offense....

I said this after the Mets lost that Monday game to Pittsburgh, most would be happy with their current record and expect to lose a few. But the way the Mets have lost just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and worried about how long they will stay in contention. The Mets have lost two in a row and all kinds of warning signs have been going off during these defeats. John Maine had his worst outing of the year and now there are reports that he could be shut down for the rest of the year. Every time the pen door opens you cross your fingers that they'll be able to get the job done, the two posts prior to this were about Duaner Sanchez and Aaron Heilman.

But what has gone under the radar for the last couple weeks is the offense. The Mets have been on two winning streaks recently in which they've faced bottom dwelling teams. While it's important to win the games your suppose to win, you also have to be competitive with the top tier teams. The Astros are more competitive then the Nats, Pirates and Pads they aren't the Cubs and we shouldn't be struggling this much against them. In the third inning of today's game the Mets loaded the bases with one out and Carlos Delgado at the plate. The Mets scored one run on a walk to Fernando Tatis and I have to be honest in the back of my mind I said here we go again. My premonition was right the Mets would be man handled by the Astros pitching staff and only Delgado would score on a solo home run. For the thrid day in a row and really even in the winning streak the Mets struggle with runners in scoring position and scoring insurance runs.
