There was recently a report that Freddy Garcia would only sign a one year deal which I was against doing, by the time Garcia was available this year what more could he provide over Armas and Vargas. But now his agent who is also Johan's agent has suggested that he maybe willing to take a multi-year deal. I like Garcia, he's a workhorse type of pitcher and next year would be a solid contributor to the rotation along with possibly helping down the stretch this year. So if he'll accept a two year deal or a third year option type of situation I'm all for it....
Look at the current rotation; Pedro may not make his start on Tues., the first option would be Armas who's on the disable list, El Duque I just don't believe will ever return and the start will land on Vargas's day but he just got lit up last night for five runs by a AAA team. Brandon Knight would be worth a look but he goes tonight and would be pitching on three days rest. By the end of the year this team might need a Freddy Garcia even though at times it seems like the rotation is crowded.
Then there's next year, I think Pedro and El Duque should not be re-signed and I don't want them giving Ollie a five year deal. But if they don't have options Boras could hold them over a barrel, I'd like to see Ollie return but on a three year deal at the most ( I don't count options). If Garcia was signed through 2009 despite losing three pitchers, if it came down to that your only replacing one and who knows, that might come from within........
Greenberg said Garcia is likely to sign for just this season, then go on the free-agent market. "You never know," Greenberg said. "If there's somebody that wants to sign him to a multiyear deal, we'll be receptive to that. Our preference is just to sign Freddy for the rest of this year." source Newsday
