I take no consolation in the fact that the team won tonight, nothing has changed because I still think they need to make significant changes. Maybe they are just a fourth place, .500 team but we'll never know what they can achieve if we don't try something different. We already know over the course of a year what this team, as it is currently constructed is capable of doing and the best description of that is lackluster, underachieving. Everybody is to blame for the current situation from Omar all the way down to the last player on the roster. But pointing fingers isn't going to help the team win, what they need to do is decide what changes can be practically made and then make them.....
Lets face it, it appears that Willie and most of his staff's fate has already been decided but that their waiting for a good excuse to fire them. Willie watch is a complete distraction to a struggling team and isn't helping the situation. The Mets have always been extremely concerned with their public image and prolonging the inevitable is hurting it more then it's helping. I assume the Wilpon's are attempting to give Willie every chance possible to keep his job, but every time they have a losing streak the distraction returns and I think even Willie supporters can't appreciate him being left hanging like this with Omar saying he's basically day-to-day, it's got to be humiliating. The players aren't going to rally around a lame duck staff, if they were going to do that, it would have already happened. Now there's rumors that Willie will make the first cut but will lose several coaches, what purpose will that accomplish aside from prolonging the distraction.
But that's not the only place that needs changing, the roster needs to be adjusted. Carlos Delgado should not be kept on this team, he represents the complacent neg. atmosphere of this club and it would send a message to the rest of the team. The bench and the bullpen need to be solidified along with acquiring a true home run threat......
Omar Minaya refused to guarantee that his on-field staff would remain intact for Monday's game in Anaheim, further fueling speculation that at least two of Willie Randolph'scoachescould be axed during the Mets'series against the Angels that opens Monday. source Daily News
