The Mets have two struggling pitchers in the starting rotation and El Duque doesn't appear anywhere near returning.
No matter how big a fan of Pedro Martinez's you are, his last two outings have to be troubling. As reported by Matt Cerrone of Metsblog Pedro believes he has been tipping his pitches, hopefully that's the problem and he can make adjustments. Then there's Ollie, sure he pitched great against the Yankees but can he repeat, that seems to always be the question with Perez.
The Mets will take a look at Tony Armas Jr. on tues, he is their best option out of New Orleans. If Armas pitches well I'm guessing they'll move him into the pen as the longman. All is quiet on the Vargas front so It appears he's going to make it through waivers and be an option in AAA.
With all the question marks in the rotation the Mets may become buyers at the deadline for a starting pitcher. Freddy Garcia has been mentioned in connection to the Mets since he became a free agent. Garcia visited Mets camp this spring, he has the same agent as his friend Johan Santana and Omar is said to be a big fan. MLBTR posted today that the Padres could become sellers at the deadline. They see LHP Randy Wolf a former Philly as a good fit for the Mets....Agent Peter Greenberg said Garcia, coming off shoulder surgery, could be ready to throw for scouts around July 20-24. The Yankees and especially the Mets are among the teams keeping tabs on Garcia; Mets GM Omar Minaya and Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez are both fans of Garcia. source Star Ledger
2009 Mets Battle cry
“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog
