2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Why is it so hard to cut Sosa

These are the type of games that are essential to a winning season, the Mets need to take 3 out of 4 from the Nats and beat-up on an inferior team, something they were unable to do at the end of last year. But it was the Nats that beat-up on the Mets, once again Jorge Sosa as the long-man allowed critical add-on runs that took the game from reasonably trailing to a blown out. The Mets had a chance to come back being down by only three runs to a Nationals team with a horrible bullpen, then Jorge Sosa came on and quickly gave up four runs. Sosa has an ERA of 7.06 and allowed 23 runs in 21 innings which has included four HRs two of which were grand slams.

Matt Wise is ready to come off the disabled list but the team is using everyday of his 30 day rehab assignment to decide who he will replace. Wise has a nasty change-up and with Heilman struggling he would be a nice compliment to Sanchez late in a game, but Wise can also pitch two innings if needed. They went as far as to bring Wise in over the weekend and then didn't activate him and ended up sending him back down to Florida.

It seems so obvious that Sosa should be designated for assignment, I'm sure part of the dilemma is that he may not accept assignment and they would lose a pitcher while owing him 2mil. But the only other option is Joe Smith and not only does Smith deserve his spot but the pen needs his arm. Smith came in tonight game and struck out the side in order, he has an ERA of 3.00 in which he's allowed six runs in fifteen innings.

The argument for keeping Sosa is that with the rotation not going deep into games they need a long-man with a rubber arm. It's true that Sosa can pitch almost everyday but what good is it if they aren't quality appearances. Don't get me wrong Sosa has looked good at times, but when he's bad he's been very bad. He's already had six multiple run outings in 19 appearances and has 11 BB/12 SO. Even if Wise flops I would rather see a youngster like Muniz get a shot then to cont. watching Sosa look good one night and then give up five runs another and there are plenty of longmen to chose from; Collazo, Vargas, Armas, Figgy, Lugo and Bostick.
