If you go under the premise that this team as it's comprised just doesn't have the proper chemistry or leadership to win and feel that a shake is in order, because the same group of players has been playing .500 ball for over a year, then you have to decide who must go. Reyes and Wright are the core of the team; Alou, Castillo, Schneider and Delgado don't have the value for the player I'm talking about, and Church has become too valuable. There are no extra starting pitchers to trade and the relievers we're willing to give up most teams wouldn't want.
That leaves Carlos Beltran, the switch hitting, gold glove center fielder might be the only chip we have to pull off a big trade. I'm not a Beltran hater ( I know they're out there) but lets face it he's too streaky and doesn't hit consistently enough to be a #4 hitter. In fact this team is lacking a clutch big time power hitter, at this point the offensive line-up looks like a bunch of complimentary players that have been thrown together without a center piece. Beltran is relatively young and locked up for four years, his glove alone would make him appealing to most teams. If he could be used in a trade for a legitimate power hitter, I would reluctantly make the deal. Beltran's .275 is great in front of or behind a great hitter like Todd Helton, but not as the center piece himself.
The Rockies are said to be ready to explore trades for Matt Holliday, the 28 y/0 right handed left fielder has a lifetime BA of .319 and a Slg. .554. Holiday is signed through 2009 and the Rockies don't seem to have a chance of re-signing him, so just as Texas moved Tex a year early the Rox could do the same.
The Rockies current center fielder Willy Taveras who is hitting .232.
Beltran's contract has become reasonable, he is due 18.5 mil. per year for four years but 22 mil. is deferred over 6 years from 2012-2018. I'm not sure if he has a no trade clause but those can usually be worked out and he might be ready to get out of the spotlight.
Church can play center, Alou in LF and Holliday RF for the season. Next year Holliday could be moved back to LF and F-Mart could be ready to take a spot in the outfield.
Whether it's Holliday or another offensive player if the Mets are still floundering at .500 around the deadline and the managerial changes which will surely have already occurred haven't sparked this team. Especially if their losing greatly pitched one run games, Omar will certainly look to make a deal and the only chip he may be able to use is Carlos Beltran.
But Holliday, an All-Star left fielder, might not be in Colorado much longer if the Rockies do not revive soon. The Rockies, 10 games back in the NL West, almost certainly would consider trading Holliday, knowing they stand little chance of keeping him long-term. Holliday, 28, could be this year's Mark Teixeira — a Scott Boras client traded with a year-plus remaining on his contract by a team seeking value for a franchise-type player. source Ken Rosenthal - Fox Sports
