After two losses to the Washington Nationals and a rain day in which we all completely dissected the team, it feels great to win a game. Sure some of our warts showed; Johan and the gofer ball, big two out hits with runners in scoring position and using the closer in the eighth because of pen concerns. But tonight the glass is half full and it feels good to win a game.
Sure the Yankees are struggling but they're still the Yankees and we were in their house. Andy Pettitte is a tough left handed pitcher and the Mets were able to score three runs but more importantly get his pitch count up to get him out of the game. The Yanks pen is their Achilles heel and the Mets took advantage of Pettitte's early departure by scoring four runs off them.
It's funny because with every start we say that Johan didn't have his best stuff but he limited the damage and now he has a 5-2 record with a 3.30 ERA ( not bad for a guy who hasn't had his best stuff yet). Today, Santana gave up three home runs but only one came with a runner on and the other two were once the Mets took a commanding lead. I notice after the Yanks had an early 2-0 lead and the Mets offense scored three he closed the door on the Yanks with three clean innings in a row. In the eighth when the Yanks closed it to within two runs, Willie made a bold move by bringing in Wagner. In a put up or shut up situation Wagner such the door and closed out the win.
The offense wasn't clicking on all cylinders as it showed in Arizona but it did enough to score runs and win the game. Wright and Beltran both went 2-5 with an extra base hit ( Beltran triple/ Wright HR), two runs scored a piece and combined for three RBIs. Alou was on base three times ( hit, BB, HBP) and Church twice (hit, BB). Delgado had a critical RBI single that added a late inning insurance run off Joba. Jose Reyes went 2-5 with a home run, Schneider and Castillo both contributed at the bottom of the order with RBIs.
The defense was solid; Beltran gunned down Jeter trying to stretch a single into a double and a Church to Castillo to Schneider relay got Damon at the plate going from first to home in which the throw was great but Schneider's blocking of the plate was superb.
After a series in which the team played lackluster and couldn't buy a break, not only did they play well in this playoff atmosphere game but luck was on their side.....
