The Mets made several rosters moves today and in doing so, showed just how committed they are to winning now. I believe several of the moves were a true departure from past practices and put the best team on the field.
They had been discussing sending Joe Smith down despite being one of the best relievers in the pen, but he was also the only pitcher with options. I don't bye the excuse that they liked the durability of Sosa, as I said last night just because he can pitch often doesn't mean he can provide quality appearances. I know Omar likes to keep as many options as possible and if he thought Sosa was salvageable then sending down Smith was the only way to guarantee keeping them both. But because of the ownership's long history of being frugal it was hard to believe that the decision wasn't just coming down to the fact that the Mets were on the hook for 2 mil. to Sosa, I still would like to know if he agreed to assignment prior to their final decision. Regardless of the process the right decision was made and the pen has kept the better relievers, Jorge Sosa was designated for assignment to make room for Matt Wise......
It had become clear that Nelson Figueroa wasn't going to cut it in the rotation and mouthing off about the Nationals "Bush league " chants (whether he was right or not) didn't help his cause. Bringing up Bostick for one start would have only served to put a band-aid on a much bigger problem in the rotation, but again it would have allowed the organization to keep as many arms as possible. I still think Figgy could be a decent arm in the pen and there's very little risk of losing him on waivers. Now the Mets have given themselves the best chance for on going success in the rotation with Claudio Vargas who can also slide into the pen if the rotation ends up having six effective arms.
I've also always thought that this Mets organization were very slow to place players on the DL. Whether it was Cliff Floyd, Paul Lo Duca or Luis Castillo the team has appeared to allow players to dictate their status even when it was detrimental to the club. The Mets moved swiftly this time placing Angel Pagan on the DL and calling up Fernando Tatis. I have no idea whether Tatis can contribute, he was hitting alot of home runs in New Orleans but it's nice to see them make a move.
