When the season is over the Mets hold a mutual buyout option on Carlos Delgado, just being a contributor won't be enough to justify his contract (16M with a 4M buyout) he needs to completely breakout and return to his Blue Jay form. The Mets have Michel Abreu who at 33 y/o might be major league capable but at his age could only be considered a short term solution and the only prospect would be Mike Carp who is struggling in AA. More then likely the Mets will be in the market for a 1B but the best candidate Mark Teixeira will get alot of attention especially from the Yankees. The rest of the 2009 free agent class of 1B aren't young or very remarkable.
So listening to the WFAN today (660AM NY) a caller suggested that David Wright be moved to 1B. The caller suggested that Wright's throwing troubles could be resolved by playing first while the less strenuous position would save his legs for offense. The host Mike Francesa stated that he believed Wright's future was at first base but wasn't sure when he'd be ready to change positions. Co-Host Chris Russo countered by saying that Wright has said in the past that he would move, of course that was in reference to Alex Rodriguez. The debate went on that at this early stage in Wright's career it would have to be a very good third baseman for him to willingly move to 1B. There's not much available in regards to free agent 3B or SS that could be converted to 3B ( 2008 free agent list). Is 2009 too early to move Wright or with the probable departure of Delgado the right time.........

Mike Carp is NOT struggling this season at AA. He's hitting around .400. Last season was not great for him as he was on DL for a large part but this year he's looking great.
Silliness. Wright has been a very solid third baseman since 2005. After his rookie year, he's averaged about 12 FRAA, a 109 Rate2, a 2.67 RFg, and I can't get all his career Plus/Minus numbers, but he had a +13 last year. Basically, every single defensive metric puts him significantly ahead of league average at his position. The thing that makes this suggestion just ridiculous is that even if Wright was one of the worst defensive third basemen in the game (which he demonstrably isn't), you would still keep him there because the offensive value he gives you at third would far outweigh any defensive shortcomings short of him pulling a Knoblauch. For the last decade the Yankees have kept a TERRIBLE defensive player at, arguably, the most important defensive position because having his bat out of the shortstop position makes him incredibly valuable no matter how badly he plays in the field.
Also, as Wayne said, Carp is freaking destroying AA this year.
Umm, get your stuff together. Carp, who was hurt for a good portion of last season at AA with a finger injury, is tearing it up this year. I believe he is hitting .463 through 14 games (5 doubles, 5 dingers, 16 RBIs) with an OBP of .500 (and slugging .833).
Yes it's AA. Yes he has a ways to go. But FMart is the heralded prospect who supposedly is going to see time in the show later this year and he's Carp's teammate and he is hitting .230 with 17 strike outs.
You're crazy. The market isn't going to be great for 1B or 3B next year. Besides, the Mets are going to continue to focus on improving the bullpen and hopefully finding a better left fielder (unless Pagan can go full-time).
Ugh.
Wright has oops moments on the easy play from time to time, but I think that he will overcome that, as pointed out Carp is crushing the ball thus far in crappy weather mind you in early Eastern League play. Nick Evans is doing the same and Dan Murphy who is playing thirdbase at the moment is also putting up great numbers.
I do not know about the latters leather, but if we are a great fielder and continues to hit, moving Wright could make sense, but Evans and Carp could very well be the right choice at first in 2009.
Thank you gentlemen for weighing in... As the post reads I'm not suggesting the idea myself simply putting out the discussion from the WFAN yesterday as I thought it was an interesting discussion...In regards to Carp I was referring to last year when he struggled after injuries and the organization was rumored to not be happy with how he kept him self in shape while injuried, it's far too early in the season to be used as a measuring stick but I'm glad he's off to a great start..... I was the one who said there are no great options in free agency at 1B or 3B or even convertable SS you must have miss read....
How about buying Delgado out but resigning him to a little one or 2 year deal? I would imagine his stock is down (as it is with the Mets and their fans)... but if they could bring him back for another year and not go crazy spending on Texiera while allowing the young guys to develop more, it could work...
Mr. Ryan, I wasn't saying you were suggesting the move, but only that our friends at 660 may be mentally better equipped for speech than thought. Also, while it would be silly to project Mr. Carp's career from the last 2 weeks, it is wrong to use the present tense while referring to his AA struggles.
