Nelson Figueroa was betrayed today, not once but twice. The Mets offense, through six innings produced one run on four hits and four walks against Ted Lilly a pitcher who was 0-3 with an ERA of nine. It wasn't a lack of opportunities, the Mets had bases loaded with one out in the third and Carlos Delgado at the plate, but an all too familiar scenario occurred with Delgado popping out and with two outs the Mets simply aren't getting it done. Then in the fourth the defense gave the game away; Pagan was so worried about deking the runner that he misplayed the ball and allowed him to score, next Carlos Delgado in his third bad defensive play of the game forgot, yes I said forgot to cover firstbase ( Oh my God he forgot to cover firstbase as the firstbase, this after making Prince Fielder look agile on two previous grounders) and then Brady Clark the former center fielder let one drop in that he could have caught. Even though a three run lead late in a game is looking insurmountable with this offense, it was still only three runs until the pen took over. Aside from Sanchez and Wagner no one looks good in the pen, another misplay by not getting the double play leads to a grand slam.
I find myself having alot less patience with this team, it's because the start of this season appears to be an extension of last year and we know how that ended. There was a theory that the collapse would motivate this team to perform better, but this appears to be as good as it gets. They just seem to tread water, winning a few and then losing a few, never stringing anything together. The Mets ran away in '06' during a 10 game road trip in which they won nine of them and the offense was relentless. This offense doesn't have that relentlessness and those who thought last year was an aberration might be wrong, this offense might just be average. I'm already at wits end with Carlos Delgado and it's so early. My problem with this team is there doesn't seem to be anyone with a killer instinct, offensively or in the pen. Aside from Wright, Reyes, Sanchez and Wagner which isn't enough to carry a team none of the rest seem to thrive in pressure situations; where hitters want to be at the plate with two outs or a reliever who says give me the ball they're not scoring. They have several nice role players like Church, Beltran, and Pagan but without a leader it's just an average offensive team. I screamed all off-season to bring in an established reliever and this pen could really use a Linebrink, Riske or Dotel.
2009 Mets Battle cry
“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog
