2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Interesting stuff on the pitching front: Show, El Duque, Sosa, Lohse

Most people looked at this roster prior to spring training and didn't see much intrigue. It appeared that aside from the last spot on the bench the roster was locked with major league contracts. But it never seems to work out that easy, which makes things interesting for us......

The Daily News reports that the Mets have been quietly shopping Scott Schnoeweis and Jorge Sosa. I think Show will be hard to move with his contract unless there's a team desperate for a lefty, I also think that Show will have a bounce back year and might be missed if he's moved. With Duaner Sanchez back Sosa is really a redundant pitcher ( hard thrower with a good off-speed pitch). But moving either or both pitchers would give the team flexibility. There are several pitchers who have looked very good so far this spring Brian Stokes, Nate Fields, Juan Padilla, Steven Register, Ruddy Lugo. If the team moved a vet. they would free up money if they need to acquire say a 1B, they would also have pitchers with options to move back and forth. During the SNY broad of the game Friday it was reported that Willie really likes Nelson Figueroa and is looking at him as a long man. With room in the pen Pelfrey could win the fifth spot but stay in New Orleans for the first two weeks allowing the team to carry six bench players. If El Duque is healthy he could be forced into the long man roll.

As you may have already ready in today’s Daily News, the Mets have started to shop Scott Schoeneweis and Jorge Sosa. Schoeneweis will make $7.2 million through 2009, while Sosa is owed $2 million this season in his final year before free agency. source Adam Rubin

Speaking of El Duque he once again took the mound for a bullpen session and left feeling uncomfortable. With Pelf pitching so well and El Duque's health such a question I think the Mets maybe forced to make a tough decision ( DL, pen, cut).

On the negative side, Orlando Hernandez only warmed up with his weighted towel before changing out of his spikes and calling it a day. While chatting with GM Omar Minaya later, he said he's just not quite where he wants to be, delivery-wise, to push himself. Not good news as we're already three weeks into camp and he's yet to do anything of significance. source Star Ledger

Finally in regards to starting pitching, yesterday the Star Ledger reported that the Mets are still considering Kyle Lohse. Could these two sides be communicating through the media, with El Duque leaning towards the DL they could sign Lohse and keep Pelf in the wings for when Pedro needs a rest....

ESPN's Buster Olney says Kyle Lohse is currently looking for a one-year deal between $4-10MM. According to Olney, multiple teams have expressed their disinterest in the Boras-represented Lohse. Lohse at $5MM seems really solid - how is this guy out of work on March 3rd? He's even young enough to have upside, which can't be said for Livan Hernandez. source MLBTR
