2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

And the honeymoon is on......

With today's opening day 7-2 win over the Florida Marlins the honeymoon between the Shea Faithful and Johan Santana is in full effect. Santana did not disappoint in his Mets debut; he was dominant, in complete control and exhibited the moxy of a true ace. In notching his first Mets win Santana went 7 innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out eight. Even the two run homer that he gave up in the fourth would have been avoided if the ump had made the proper called strike three on the prior hitter. At one point Santana, Catcher Brian Schneider and Pitching coach Rick Peterson could be seen in the dugout enthusiastically talking about the movement on Johan's changeup.

Santana retired the first nine Marlins he faced, then went 28 minutes without throwing a pitch while his teammates kept piling up runs.

Ramirez drew a leadoff walk and, two outs later, Josh Willingham homered to left field.

Santana set down seven of the next nine batters, striking out five. When he walked off the field after the seventh, the decidedly pro-Mets crowd of 38,308 at Dolphin Stadium gave him a long cheer. source The Record
