2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Reserve Relievers pitching in Winter Ball

Newly acquired Brian Stokes pitched in the Mexican league, in 12 games he had a record of 3-3 with an ERA of 4.30. Not very impressive especially since it was in Winter league ball, but it appears most of the negative numbers came as a starter. In nine relief appearances (10.2 innings) he had a record of 2-1, an ERA 1.69 while batters hit .216. He will be a reserve middle reliever, awaiting call-ups in New Orleans much like Bell two years ago.....

In the Venezuelan league Willie Collazo is making a case to be considered a starter. He is already on the cusp of becoming a LOOGY and on some small market teams he would have been in the pen all year. Despite being a good lefty reliever, he is starting in winter ball this year with a record of 3-3 in 11 starts (59 innings) with an ERA of 3.20.

Fellow New Orleans lefty Adam Bostick pitched in the Dominican league, he made three starts his last on Dec. 22. I haven't heard any injury reports so I'm guessing he was shut down to rest for the winter. In those starts Bostick went 0-1 with an ERA of 2.77 with batters hitting .174. I think Bostick has a very good chance of becoming a major league starter.

I'm surprised Jorge Sosa pitched at all in winter ball. After a great 2005 season he attributed an awful 2006 to be tired from working winter ball in the off-season. It appears that Sosa got a few innings in and went home. He pitched in five games in the Dominican league, all were starts (32 innings) he posted an ERA of 0.00 in which hitters had a BA of 0.63. I'm curious to see where Sosa fits into the pitching staff fifth starter (doubt full), long relief (possible) or middle reliever (probable).
