2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

They should be looking at Bedard

I know earlier in the day Matt Cerrone at Metblog covered Buster Olney's trade proposal between the Mets and the Orioles but I wanted to weigh in on the subject myself. First of all I like Bradford and he would be a solid pick-up to return to the pen, while Brian Roberts would be a nice fit at second. I'm not thrilled with the Ramon Hernandez idea and he's a weaker hitter then Lo Duca, but if their bent on a new catcher I guess he'll do.

More importantly if Lo Duca and Castillo were already in the fold the Mets could be dangling Milledge or Gomez and a pitcher, say Pelfrey for Bedard if that wasn't enough throw in Ahern or Johnson. Maybe expand the trade to include Bradford for Heilman, Collazo or Smith type young controllable cheap reliever. I'm not one to try and figure out these fair, make-believe trades and I like the players Olney recommended if we need to fill the positions, but as I said in my last post the focus should be pitching......

The guy who makes the most sense is the Orioles' Ramon Hernandez, who is coming off a lousy year but could be revitalized playing for a contender, and in being reunited with former Oakland pitching coach Rick Peterson.

It would make sense for the Mets to engage the O's in talks that could begin with Hernandez and expand, perhaps. The O's could use a young center fielder, and the Mets have two on the rise, in Lastings Milledge and Carlos Gomez, and besides Hernandez, there are Baltimore veterans who would fit in very nicely for New York: reliever Chad Bradford, for example, and (this is ambitious) second baseman Brian Roberts, whose inclusion would require the Mets to flip a young pitcher or two to the O's.
