2009 Mets Battle cry

“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.” : source Metsblog

Today's rumblings about Castillo

When a player gets this much hype I begin to think it's either a smoke screen or a done deal. Either Omar is allowing word to leak to conceal his true intentions or discussions are so far along that he can't contain the media.

Last year at the trade deadline we were inundated with Dontrele Willis and Julio Lugo rumors. Meanwhile, Omar was actually working an Oswalt deal that no one knew about until it fell apart at the last minute.

But then in August when the offense sputtered after Nady was traded we heard for over a week that Sean Green was coming and sure enough the trade was made.

So I'm very skeptical when one player gets this much coverage. Luis Castillo hadn't even been mentioned two weeks ago and now he's linked to the Mets, every day in numerous papers.

Here are today's rumors about Castillo......

A scout from the Minnesota Twins has spent the last two days here, and the Mets have inquired about their second baseman, Luis Castillo, whose superb defense and history of high batting averages make him an intriguing option. source NY Times

So fewer waiver claims will result in a larger "pool" of players eligible to be dealt. Which means, for instance, that the Mets don't necessarily have to decide on second base by Tuesday. They could talk next month about Kansas City's Mark Grudzielanek or Minnesota's Luis Castillo. source

The hottest rumor has Castillo a target of the Mets, where he could form an effective one-two punch with All-Star shortstop Jose Reyes. The chances increased some Saturday when Ty Wigginton, who plays second and third, was traded from Tampa Bay to Houston for relief pitcher Dan Wheeler. source
